On April 17, 2026, Team “Kalahan”, consisting of 31 Block B first-year students from the College of Social Work, successfully carried out their NSTP community project at Shilan, La Trinidad, Benguet. Under the guidance of their NSTP adviser, Ma’am Jean Langan, the group focused on their initiative titled, “An Environmental Signage Installation and Beautification Project for a Sustainable Barangay.”
“Kalahan,” a Kalanguya term for a small yet tough tree. Just like the “Kalahan”, they stand strong and sturdy when united. The group name reflects their commitment to resilience and sustainability, and their belief that true progress begins with protecting our local environment and nurturing our fellow citizens. They were able to provide a meaningful service that supports the growth and well-being of Barangay Shilan.
The day featured various activities aimed at improving the surrounding community. The team was divided into three groups in order to maximize project efficiency. The first group worked on coffee plant pruning, removing unproductive or overcrowded limbs, and encouraging new growth with the help of Forest Ranger Macario S. Toyan. The second group, facilitated by Kagawad Julio Molintas, gave the Pagal waiting shed a fresh look by coating it with paint, with the inclusion of writing the garbage collection schedule, a bible verse, and creative designs. Together with kagawad Peter Bahod Jr., the third group promoted cleanliness by installing environmental signage to encourage and remind the people to keep the community clean and green. They also picked up garbage and segregated it to keep the pathways neat.
Team Kalahan went the extra mile by helping out during the barangay’s foundation day. As a display of gratitude for the Barangay’s provision of free lunch, the team took the opportunity to help serve food to the residents of Barangay Shilan who were present during the program. The project was made possible through coordination with the barangay officials of Shilan. It allowed the team to practice the values of service and cooperation, thus upholding their civic-oriented principles.
