Promoting Water-Conscious Building Standards through Sustainable Campus Infrastructure

Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) integrates water conservation into its campus infrastructure through the installation of water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems, and plumbing facilities designed to support the responsible use of water resources. These building features help reduce water consumption, minimize wastage, and promote more sustainable campus operations.

CCDC incorporates water-efficient appliances and fixtures in its buildings, including low-flush water closets, water-efficient wastafels (washbasins), and waterless urinals. These facilities help reduce water use while maintaining sanitation and functionality. Based on the College’s documented water-efficiency inventory, 20 of its 46 toilets and five of its 19 wastafels are identified as water-efficient appliances. These installations reflect the institution’s continuing efforts to incorporate water-saving features into campus facilities.

The College also integrates rainwater harvesting into its building and plumbing systems. Gutters and pipelines collect rainwater from building rooftops and channel it into strategically located storage tanks. The harvested water is used for non-potable purposes, including toilet flushing, landscape irrigation, plant watering, and general cleaning. Water barrels placed inside comfort rooms provide an additional means of collecting and using rainwater for manual toilet flushing when needed.

To maintain the efficiency of these facilities, CCDC regularly inspects and maintains plumbing fixtures to identify and repair leaks and prevent unnecessary water loss. Deep wells serve as a supplementary water source during periods of low rainfall or increased demand, while rainwater harvesting helps reduce dependence on groundwater.

Through these building features and infrastructure practices, CCDC demonstrates how water conservation can be incorporated into the planning, installation, and maintenance of campus facilities. By prioritizing water-efficient fixtures, integrating rainwater collection systems, and maintaining functional plumbing infrastructure, the College continues to strengthen its commitment to resource efficiency and environmental sustainability.
