ENSURING PROPER WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT THROUGH SEPTIC TANK TREATMENT AND RESPONSIBLE DISPOSAL

Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) implements a wastewater management process to promote sanitation, prevent water pollution, and protect public health and the environment. In line with the objectives of the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9275), the College manages wastewater generated by its campus facilities through a septic tank system, periodic maintenance, and the proper collection and disposal of accumulated septage.

Wastewater Collection and Initial Treatment. Wastewater generated from campus facilities, particularly restrooms and wash areas, is conveyed to septic tanks for containment and initial treatment. Within these tanks, solids settle and separate from the liquid wastewater, allowing preliminary treatment before further handling and disposal.

Inspection, Maintenance, and Desludging. To maintain the effectiveness of the system and minimize the risk of leaks, overflows, and environmental contamination, CCDC conducts periodic septic tank inspections and arranges desludging when necessary. These activities help ensure the continued functionality of the wastewater containment system and the proper management of accumulated sludge.

Septage Collection and Responsible Disposal. Accumulated septage is collected by an authorized desludging service provider and transported to an appropriate treatment facility for processing and disposal in accordance with applicable environmental and sanitation requirements. This process helps prevent the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater and untreated septage into the surrounding environment.

Development of an Institutional Sewage Treatment Facility. To further strengthen its wastewater management capacity, CCDC approved a plan in 2025 to establish its own sewage treatment facility, with an estimated project cost of up to ₱15 million. Construction of the CCDC sewage treatment facility commenced in 2025, marking a significant step toward developing dedicated wastewater treatment infrastructure on campus. Once completed and operational, the facility is intended to enhance the College’s capacity to treat wastewater generated by campus activities and strengthen its long-term wastewater management practices.

Through its existing septic tank management process, responsible septage disposal practices, and ongoing development of a dedicated sewage treatment facility, CCDC continues to advance its commitment to environmental protection, pollution prevention, and a safe and sanitary campus. These measures support the College’s broader sustainability objectives and its responsibility to manage wastewater in accordance with applicable environmental standards.
