Moving Forward Together: How Our Campus Commute is Driving a Greener Future

Sustainability at Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it thrives on the very roads our community travels. Every morning, our campus comes alive as 316 dedicated employees—including 243 teachers and 73 support staff, comprising 220 women and 87 men—arrive ready to inspire.

A recent Employee Commute Survey highlights a beautiful, shared rhythm among our workforce, proving that our collective morning routine weaves us deeply into the fabric of our local community. By bypassing single-occupancy vehicles in favor of public transit and active walking, our institution is directly advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), proving that how we arrive on campus is just as impactful as what we achieve here.

Public transit serves as our community’s ultimate lifeline, with a proud 235 employees relying on public utility jeepneys (PUJs) and taxis. This shared journey creates a unique bond among our staff, particularly in the College of Health Education (CHE), where an incredible 77 out of 79 faculty members embrace public transit every single day. Our high school departments mirror this strong community connection, meaning that while a transit strike or downtown traffic delay can occasionally ripple into our classrooms, it only highlights how deeply connected and essential our educators are to the moving parts of our city. At the same time, active commuting is thriving on our campus, capturing the energy of 55 wonderful colleagues who happily walk to work. The CBEA Faculty passionately leads this healthy movement with 9 regular walkers, proving just how close-knit our neighborhood truly is. Meanwhile, private transit remains remarkably rare and mindful; only 21 employees drive cars, and a mere 7 people commute by bicycle or motorcycle. This means nearly three-quarters of our staff are actively keeping their carbon footprint low, opening up an exciting doorway for our next green campus initiatives.

Even when heavy traffic slows down vehicles during peak hours, our resilient team effortlessly turns a daily urban challenge into a joyful wellness routine. Embracing a quick 10-to-20-minute walk to get home or reach clear transit hubs during morning, afternoon, and evening rushes, our staff views this time as a great opportunity for daily exercise. They are proactively turning traffic delays into a healthy habit to stay energized before and after work. Our incredible workforce has already paved the way by turning their daily commute into a model for fitness and sustainability, and now, it is our turn to champion their efforts. By aligning our campus with SDG 11, we can transform these walks into a shining example of sustainable urban mobility. Through planned investments in secure bike racks, proactive carpooling networks, and beautifully upgraded walking pathways, Cordillera Career Development College is building a campus that moves together, treads lightly, and proudly leads the way towards a greener tomorrow.
