CCDC Sets the Standard with New Workplace Mental Health Guide

Mental health is vital to employee well-being and productivity. Globally, 15% of working adults experience mental disorders, with depression and anxiety costing $1 trillion annually in lost productivity (WHO). The ILO attributes rising mental health issues to job insecurity, stress, and economic pressures—risks that are even greater for informal workers, especially women caregivers.

In the Philippines, 87% of workers report at least one mental health impact, 11% above the global average, with half experiencing four or more (AXA Mind Health Study 2024).

To address this, the Philippine Mental Health Act (RA 11036) mandates workplaces to promote well-being, prevent mental illness, and provide access to care. Employers must collaborate with mental health professionals on policies that include awareness, training, and referral systems. The law also ensures a supportive environment, prohibits discrimination, and requires reasonable accommodations to help employees thrive.

In response to this, the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) is intensifying its advocacy and initiatives as an institution that promotes healthy behaviors and fosters supportive environments. As part of this commitment, CCDC will soon release its own Mental Health in the Workplace Policy and Guidelines Handbook for its employees.

This initiative builds on years of implementing well-established strategies, such as Sound Body, Sound Mind and the ADJAS series. The handbook also introduces new practices, including mindful lunch sessions, dedicated wellness hours where employees are encouraged to pause from work to walk, jog, or engage in light activities with colleagues and also the psychological assessments for top and middle managers.

This will help the staff to work more efficiently and productively. As this program covers all employees of CCDC from teaching, non-teaching, administrative, and support staff regardless of employment status. It recognizes that every member of the institution, from classrooms to offices, plays a vital role in fostering a compassionate, supportive, and mentally healthy work environment.

Meanwhile CCDC also developed a guidebook for the students entitled “Kayak” Series. This is developed by the Guidance and Counseling Office, and introduces student-centered programs that prioritize student needs and engagement.

Its first initiative, the Freshman Survival Guidebook titled “How to Row Your Boat,” is a playful yet practical manual for new and transfer students. It offers key information about the school, study tips, interactive activities, and resources to help students adjust smoothly and feel a sense of belonging at CCDC.
