Top Borrower Recognition Program: Promoting Library Engagement and Lifelong Learning

The Top Borrower Award Program was conducted on February 2 and May 15, 2026, at the library. The program was designed to address one of the ongoing challenges faced by libraries today—the utilization of library resources. With the rise of the internet, most students now rely on online sources of information. However, the library continues to uphold the first three laws of library science by Ranganathan: (1) Books are for use; (2) Every reader has his/her book; and (3) Every book has its reader.

In line with these principles, the program was created to encourage students to borrow books and maximize the use of library resources. Recognizing top borrowers also serves as motivation for others to actively engage with the library. Overall, the program supports the library’s objective of providing access to learning resources and information services. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by promoting reading and lifelong learning, and SDG 5: Gender Equality by ensuring equal access to resources for all.

The Top Borrower Award recognizes individuals who consistently maximize the use of library resources. This semester, some of the awardees were also previous recipients of the same recognition, reflecting their continued engagement with the library’s programs and services.

When asked about the program, the awardees shared that it serves as a good way to encourage both faculty and students to engage with the library. They also mentioned that it motivates them to read a wider range of references for the subjects they are handling and encourages them to borrow more books.

Overall, the Top Borrower Award Program successfully fulfilled its purpose of encouraging students to maximize the use of library resources and develop a stronger appreciation for reading. By recognizing active library users, the program not only motivates continued engagement but also inspires others to explore the wealth of knowledge available in the library. It reinforces the importance of reading as a lifelong habit and highlights the library’s role in supporting academic growth and learning. Through this initiative, a stronger culture of reading, responsibility, and academic excellence is continuously fostered among students and faculty alike.
