Future Nurses Engage in Environmental Stewardship Through Tree Caring

March 19, 2026 — A total of 36 first-year nursing students from Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC), together with their NSTP adviser, Dennis D. Guiniguin, successfully conducted a tree caring activity in Pongayan, Kapangan. The initiative was carried out in coordination with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), led by Dennis G. Dionisio, with the support of MENRO staff.

The project, titled “Tree Caring,” aimed to maintain and support the growth of previously planted trees in the area. Instead of planting new seedlings, the activity focused on sustaining existing ones to ensure their survival and long-term environmental impact.

Participants performed weeding using sickles to remove unwanted plants surrounding the trees. The collected weeds were then used for mulching, a method in which organic materials are placed around the base of trees to help retain soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and serve as a natural fertilizer.

Through this effort, the students not only contributed to environmental conservation but also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of proper tree maintenance. The activity highlights how small, consistent actions can help protect and sustain the environment for future generations.
